His given name was Leviathan.  He was born from Kuchel, a slave, and raised on the desert planet of Tatooine.  He never knew the true meaning of his name until he began his Jedi training in Coruscant, which gave him access to the archaic books of the Jedi Library.  

Leviathan:  A sea monster.  The ancient serpent.  The great red dragon in the sea, with seven heads and ten horns…
