by starlight

monidon:

Inspired by cute date headcanons @redscarfedsoldier was feeding me because of week-long sads. Levi the unintentional romantic.

Written to this.

The bitter yet comforting scent of roasted coffee grinds mixed with a hint of cinnamon filled the air as Levi eyed Mikasa from behind the safety of his laptop. The clean blanket and fresh cup of coffee – poured into the nice china now, not the chipped mug she’d been using – did nothing to coax her from the small ball she curled herself into, eyes puffy from three days of crying, hair oily and unwashed. He almost wished she’d go back to the way she was before; looking like she still had some sort of fight in her instead of the stone-faced shell she was now. He felt useful then, kissing and rubbing his thumbs into her shoulders as her body shook with broken sobs, running his fingers through her hair as she fell into dreamless sleeps. Despite it all, she had never looked any less attractive to him.

“You know,” he started, reaching over for her ankle with gentle fingers, “the Lyrids are supposed to fall tonight.”

She gave a noncommittal grunt.

“With all the rain we’ve gotten recently, we might just be able to see them.”

Still, she stayed silent, though from the corner of his eye, he could see her lift her head just the slightest bit and stare at the sky from their open window.

“…but I’ll probably be too busy looking at you to notice them.” he mumbled, a little discouraged.

It’s subtle, but her lips quirk up in the smallest of smiles – almost too small for him to notice if he didn’t catch it in time. Then she reaches for the cup and Levi finally allows himself to feel hopeful. This, he thinks, is the most beautiful he has ever seen her.

Outside, one, then two, three flashes of light streak across the sky, bright for only a moment until they fade into the night. More follow, one by one, like diamonds falling to the earth.
